08. Saturated Fats Shorten Life

Are you a cheese lover? Do you enjoy indulging in sausages and buttery treats? Well, we’ve got some news for you – those delicious foods could be shortening your life!
Saturated fats are notorious for increasing the levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol in our bodies, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and a range of other serious health conditions. This is why experts advise that saturated fats should make up no more than 10% of an adult over 50’s diet.
Recent research has found that consuming high amounts of saturated fat can also increase insulin sensitivity, which can lead to the development of diabetes. One study found that participants who consumed high levels of saturated fats increased their insulin sensitivity by a shocking 12.5%, while those who consumed healthier monounsaturated fats like olive oil saw an 8.8% decrease!
But that’s not all: high levels of saturated fat were also found to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, especially in people with elevated triglycerides and low levels of “good” HDL cholesterol. While we do need some fat in our diets to function efficiently, if you’re over 50, it’s crucial to limit your intake of saturated fats.
Men should aim for no more than 30 g of saturated fat daily, while women shouldn’t exceed 20 g. Instead, choose healthier unsaturated alternatives like vegetable oils, nuts, avocados, and oily fish. Opt for leaner cuts of meat, or trim off any excess fat, and enjoy your meals with the peace of mind that you’re doing your body a favor!
